This season, chaotic print supremos Basso and Brooke smartened up. That meant out with the dainty dresses, and in with sharply-cut suits and reefer tuxes. In any other designer this might have been a turn towards the staid, (and a very sad one, when B&B are one of the few reliably carnivalistic creators on the schedule) but classic shaped shifts and smart coats were given the Basso and Brooke measure of trademark bonkers with lovably clashing patterns and prints.
Behind the scenes, Bruno Basso heralded the collection as “a new phase in our work”, and having seen years of micro mini, extrovert frocks from them, we’d be inclined to agree. The design duo took inspiration from Matisse’s paper cut era, contrasting geometric, graphic patterns in swatches across boxy jackets and trousers. They still managed to have a bit of fun with shape- cutting super wide trousers that resembled skirts from some angles (but would ultimately be cartwheel friendly), and adding a tomboyish touch to their dresses.
We were especially thrilled with their accessories- part of their collaboration with the Cambridge Satchel Company. If all-over prints are too much for you, but you fancy dabbling in a bit of pattern, these patchwork numbers nicely straddle the line between classic and crazy- much like the rest of the collection.
