Jonathan Saunders. What a pro….

If it is was any other designer, the fact that his show opened as the sun was setting across a phenomenal London skyline as we watched from the millionth floor of the Broadgate Tower might have been a fortunate accident. Because it was Jonathan Saunders, we knew it was by design- such is the perfectionism of the nicest man in fash.

The hallmarks of the JS brand were there this season- the unusual colour combinations that somehow seem obvious now he’s point them out (brown and mint green? Red and burgundy? but of course!). But for Autumn they’re there to give a twist to a jaunty equestrian/golfy silhouette. Mixed in with smart brocade fabrics and textured padded suiting was a new blowsy floral that lightened the mood a little. Outfitted all at once, the mixture of fabrics, prints and colours was a bit much for one prudent dresser, but taken individually each garment looked easy to incorporate into your existing wardrobe without any fashion expertise whatsoever. This was a collection that had a little something for everyone- the grown up polished dresser, the flirty party dresser, the politician’s wife, the nonchalant tomboy. That trick of having something in your pocket for everyone is a good one- and one Jonathan Saunders plays masterfully.
